There will be several Extension Events this month that livestock producers, business owners and citizens will find of interest.  They include the following:

CATTLE:

The Jackson, Macon and Swain (JMS) County Cattlemen’s Association
October 20, 2015
7:00 – 9:00 PM
Jackson County, NC

This educational program will include a “Soil Testing Demonstration” by Macon County Agricultural Agent Joe Deal. County Extension Director Robert Hawk will talk about using evergreen trees for wind breaks/small shelter belts for needed protection for winter warmth, spring calving and summer shade. Free Norway Spruce seedlings will be given away.  Dinner will also be served.

JMS Cattlemen’s Association is dedicated to the Cattle Industry. If you have one head, 100 head or just an interest in Cattle this is the Association for you. 

Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Training and Certification

Canton Livestock Center

Session topics will include:  cattle handling; transportation; herd health (chute side demonstration); nutrition and calf management. To register please contact Ethan Henderson at (828) 255-5522.

The BQA Mission: To maximize consumer confidence and acceptance of beef by focusing producer’s attention to daily production practices that influence the safety, wholesomeness, and quality of beef and beef products. This is a national program.

CONSERVATION:

Conservation Christmas Tree

Jackson Extension Center (outside at the picnic tables)

A quick tree planting demonstration will be provided, along with free Norway and Siberian Spruce seedlings to take home to plant outside as an outdoor living Christmas Tree for the coming holidays. In the future these seedlings will also provide many conservation benefits to your outdoor space like wildlife habitat, increased property value/aesthetics and erosion control.

4-H Adopt-A-Tree Program w/Backyard & Beyond 4-H Club

Swain County Cooperative Extension

Swain County 4-H introduces Backyard & Beyond 4-H Club! Join us to learn more about 4-H and plans for future programs. Connect with nature right outside your own back door! Discover, explore and experience the great outdoors and have tons of fun!! Also, pick up a Free Spruce Seedling and learn how to plant and care for your new seedling, in your backyard. Leopold Education Project: NC Facilitators Workshop

Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, Southern Pines, NC

Expand experience levels of “reading the landscape” and increase general teaching skills involved in outdoor education, learn how to create a personal land ethic in young people and facilitate an LEP Educators Workshop, gain more in-depth background knowledge on Aldo Leopold and his contributions to resource management. 1.5 CEUs and for North Carolina Environmental Education Certification criteria I, II or III.
