skiwalkingpic“Where is the snow?” is probably the most frequent question we are asked during our weekly ski walking program. Using ski walking poles to enhance your hike is one of the easiest ways to increase the amount of calories burned, to provide more stability and to get your heart pumping.

Another question we hear is “Why use ski walking poles?” Here are several facts and specifications about ski walking poles, the techniques used and the health benefits.

Ski Walking poles (also called Nordic walking poles or fitness poles):

  • These poles are usually one section and sized to fit the person’s height.
  • Placement of the pole tip is to the sides and behind the body while walking (imitating the motion of cross-country skiing).
  • Used for pushing off the ground following the natural gait of arm/leg motion to engage the entire body referred to as the plant/push method.
  • These poles are not gripped tightly, but rather, held loosely. This is accomplished because of the angled handle grips and mini-gloves that assist the extended swinging movement.
  • Uses the upper body to burn more calories per mile while feeling like you are exerting less energy.
  • Decreases the amount of impact on weight-bearing joints.

  • Develops upright body posture.
  • Ski walking burns up to 46 percent more calories.
