March is National Nutrition Month and this year’s theme is Eat Right Bite by Bite.

Eating healthier foods can be delicious and satisfying.

When you start making changes to your eating plan, it can be overwhelming when replacing unhealthy foods with healthier choices. The best practice is to keep things simple and follow these tips to add a variety of nutritious food every day.

  • Focus on eating more fruits. Choose fresh, cut-up fruits, rather than fruit juice, so you can reap the benefits fiber provides. Start the day by adding fruit to your breakfast choices. It’s easy to add fruit to your cereals, yogurt or pancakes. Add a tangerine or banana in your packed lunch.
  • Vary your vegetables. Brighten your salad by adding colorful vegetables. Shop for vegetables that are in season for added freshness at a lower cost. Choose a new vegetable that you’ve never tried.
  • Go lean with protein such as poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Buy skinless chicken or remove the skin before cooking. Bake, grill, roast, or boil meat instead of frying. Trim away any visible fat.
  • Rethink your drink. Drink water instead of unhealthy sugary sodas. Drink water with and between your meals. When you choose milk, select low-fat or fat-free milk. If you do choose to have a soft drink, limit the amount you consume by choosing a smaller portion.
  • Make half your grains whole. Check the nutrition label to ensure you are selecting 100% whole wheat bread, pasta, rice, or tortillas. Popcorn is a whole grain food and makes a quick and easy snack.
  • Instead of focusing on unhealthy foods that you can’t eat, try refocusing on all the new foods you can eat.
