In recent months, due to several unforeseen events, many families are preparing more meals at home. However, at times, some might want to go out to eat. When we do decide to go out to eat, there are several suggestions we should keep in mind.

First, remember that most restaurant portions are very large. Therefore, make sure to watch your portion size:

  • Order a small portion or share your main dish, beverage and dessert with a friend.
  • Beware of “all-you-can-eat” buffets (order a specific item from the menu).
  • Order the appetizer-size as your entrée.
  • If the portion is too large and you are by yourself, ask for a “doggy bag” immediately and pack some away before you start eating.

Secondly, there could be many hidden calories in the dishes or items we order. Therefor, remember to watch the calories:

  • Choose water, low-fat milk or other unsweetened beverage instead of soda or sweet tea.
  • Start with a veggie salad (avoid too much cheese, croutons and bacon bits).
  • Order salad dressing “on the side”.
  • Choose main dishes that include lots of vegetables.
  • Avoid fried dishes (order steamed, broiled or grilled).
  • Choose dishes without gravies or creamy sauces.
  • Include more whole grains (order whole grain bread, rice or pasta).

When we keep these suggestions in mind, we can enjoy eating out and still provide a healthy, low-calorie meal to our family.
