Our elementary students have returned to the classroom and the Currituck County 4-H Backpacks for Kids program has begun distributing weekend meals to students in need. As many programs have experienced, donations that fund this important work are down significantly in 2020 but the need remains great. The Currituck County 4-H Backpacks for Kids program is supported 100% through community, individual, and corporate donations and grant funds.
Volunteers from the community, including deputies from the local sheriff’s department, help make delivery of the food possible. Each child receives enough food for six full weekend meals, including cereal or pop tarts, a protein source such as tuna fish or beef stew, peanut butter, canned vegetables and fruit, soup, juice boxes, and a snack such as peanut butter crackers or yogurt snacks. Through this program, children at-risk of hunger can be reached and receive adequate nutrition in a safe and easily accessible setting during out of school time when they are most at risk of going hungry. The program typically serves approximately 100 Currituck County students each week.
How can you help? Community monetary donations are needed. The approximate cost to feed one child monthly is twenty dollars. Citizens can visit the 4-H Backpacks for Kids website for details about the program, or make contributions: Backpacks for Kids. Donations can also be received via check mailed to the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center at 120 Community Way, Barco, NC 27917. Checks should be made payable to the Currituck Extension Foundation.
