4-H Gem Mining


Let us see if we can strike it rich! Spend the morning looking for gems at the Mason Mountain Mine. Afternoon activities include: a picnic lunch, a visit to the Gem Museum and Historical Museum and then cool off in the water features at Wesley Park.

  • 10:00  – Begin the day at Mason Mountain Mine, Franklin
  • 4-Hers ages: 5-18 + Families
  • Cost: $10 (includes one bucket of dirt plus snacks and water for the day) OR $30 family bucket
  • Register by: June 9

NOTE:  Wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty. Bring lunch and a drink, swim suit, towel & water shoes. Water and snacks provided. Transportation on your own.

Hunter Safety Course

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE (hosted by Swain County 4-H)

More than a firearm safety course, instruction includes ethics and responsibility, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife identification, survival and first aid, specialty hunting and tree stand safety. This course meets the hunter education requirement for all first-time hunting license buyers in NC. Certification is accepted in every state.

*Note: There are no minimum age requirements, however, classes are taught at a sixth grade level and tests must be completed without assistance.

Baseball field


Join the Asheville Tourists and other West District 4-Hers for a night at the ballpark. Enjoy watching the Asheville Tourists as they play against the Rome Braves.

NOTE: Swain County 4-H will pre-order tickets. Tickets can be picked up at the Will Call booth. The discounted ticket price will not be offered at the gate. Transportation on your own.

Horse back rider

3-Day Mounted Horse Clinic

  • June 19-22, 2022
  • Check-in: June 19 @ 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
  • Daily Activities Begin: 8:30 a.m.
  • Cost: $80 for youth with horses ($70 for each additional youth in same family)
  • 3 Day Mounted Horse Clinic Schedule

This horsemanship clinic is designed for youth to increase their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. Each child brings his/her horse. Participants will receive instruction in riding classes by selected disciplines. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rider, this clinic has something to offer you!

Two Footed Participant Horse Clinic

If you currently do not have a horse of your own, but love horses and want to learn how to care for them, this unmounted 2-day clinic is for you! You will be hands on with horses in the very first hour. Learn about what they eat, the different types and get hands on practice on how to work with them. Bring a bagged lunch each day. Parents may stay or leave.

Additional Fees: Tuesday Night Picnic – $10 per guest. Camping Fee – $20 per day. Cattle participation fee – $20 per person. Shavings – $7 per bag.
