4-H Gem Mining

4-H GEM MINING DAY (District Event)

Let us see if we can strike it rich! Spend the morning looking for gems at the Mason Mountain Mine. For the afternoon activities plan to meet at the Macon County Cooperative Extension (193 Thomas Heights Rd.) meeting room for lunch and listen to a speaker that will tell us about precious gems and minerals.

  • 9:30 a.m. – Begin the day at Mason Mountain Mine, (5315 Bryson City Road, Franklin, NC)
  • 4-Hers ages: 5-18 + Families
  • Cost: $10 (includes one bucket of dirt) 
  • Register by: June 6

NOTE:  Wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty. Bring a bagged lunch and a drinks for the day. Transportation on your own.


Hunter Safety Course

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE (hosted by Swain County 4-H)

More than a firearm safety course, instruction includes ethics and responsibility, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife identification, survival and first aid, specialty hunting and tree stand safety. This course meets the hunter education requirement for all first-time hunting license buyers in NC. Certification is accepted in every state.

  • Cost: FREE (Bring your own lunch – snacks provided)

*Note: There are no minimum age requirements, however, classes are taught at a sixth grade level and tests must be completed without assistance.


Horse back rider

WEST DISTRICT HORSEMANSHIP CLINIC (District Event)

This horsemanship clinic is designed for youth to increase their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. Each child brings his/her horse. Participants will receive instruction in riding classes by selected disciplines. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rider, this clinic has something to offer you! Transportation on your own.

  • Mounted Clinic: Bring your own horse and ride in your favorite discipline with highly trained clinicians!!
  • Unmounted/Two-Footed Clinic: If you love horses but aren’t quite to the stage of ownership then this Horse 101 Clinic is for you!

4-H POTTERY: CLAY CREATIONS

Mold, shape, smooth and get your hands dirty as you are taught some basic clay sculpting techniques. Youth will be creating their own clay mug and bowl.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME: 4-H NIGHT WITH THE ASHEVILLE TOURISTS (District Event)

Join the Asheville Tourists and other West District 4-Hers for a night at the ballpark.Enjoy watching the Asheville Tourists as they play against the Hickory Crawdads.

Learn how to capture the perfect shot with our 4-H Photography Course led by Miranda Moody Photography. Bring your own device (camera, cell phone, etc.)

Learn basic photography techniques, how to catch the best shot using lighting and angle and more fun tips.

Photos can be entered in this year’s Swain County Agricultural Fair on August 19. See page 4 for more details about youth fair categories.
