PICT0095

Carolina Woodturning Company in 1941. Photo taken by I.K. Stearns.

I.K. Stearns was the company president, and took a good number of photos. He was the grandson of Jeremiah Shank, the man who got the business started under the name of Bryson City Pump Works.

The plant steam whistle, by which area folks set their clocks, was called “Shank’s Whistle.”

This photo was provided by Carl Grueninger, Jr., the nephew of I.K. Stearns
