Why should my child attend 4-H Overnight Camp?

There are few tools as powerful as the camp experience to positively impact the lives of young people. Whether it’s through nurturing social skills, building self-confidence, re-connecting kids with nature, or supporting positive peer-to-peer relationships, North Carolina 4-H Camp has the power to transform the lives of every child that walks through our doors.

What will my child do at 4-H Camp?

Your child can look forward to a week of making new friends, swimming, archery, canoeing, rock climbing, games, campfires, sleeping in cabins, and much more. The life skills they learn at camp, including responsibility and independence, will help them in school, when they attend college, and in their first jobs.

What will my child learn at 4-H Camp?

4-H teaches responsibility and independence, promotes physical health, and builds affinity for nature.

When & Where is 4-H Camp?

Swain County 4-H will be camping at Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp, June 29- July 4, 2025! Learn more about Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp.

Who can attend 4-H Camp?

Children ages 8-12 can attend traditional 4-H camp. Limited spaces are available for 13-14 year-olds in the Adventure and Trekker programs. Camper Age = your child’s age at the time of camp week, June 29-July 4.

Adventure Program: Focuses on developing outdoor living skills and includes a two-night on-site camp out. These campers learn fire building, orienteering, outdoor cooking, tent set-up, and can zip-line at high ropes. During the camp out, campers will stay in a single-gender tent they learn to set up themselves, prepare and cook their own campfire meals.

Trekker Program: These campers participate in an over-night, off-site camp-out and trip that includes rock climbing at Pilot Mountain State Park, and Commission led river tubing on the Dan River, a low-class rapid river. Trekkers learn advanced canoeing skills, climbing skills using the climbing wall and high ropes course. They learn how to set-up their own tents, prepare and cook their own meals over an open campfire. Tents are single-gender. Instructor to camper ratio is 1:6.

Trekker note: much of the time is learning specialized skills in preparation for their trip, so these campers do not participate in many of the normal camp activities like archery, crafts, etc. They will, however, return in time for the end of camp dance. * The safety of campers is first priority, and the center reserves the right to cancel the trip in the event of inclement weather and/or unforeseen circumstances.*

What is the cost of 4-H Camp?

The 4-H Camp tuition covers an all-inclusive, six-day experience at an ACA-accredited camping center. Full and partial scholarship opportunities are available.
Traditional Campers, Ages 8-12: $550
Adventure and Trekker Campers, Ages 13-14: $600
